If you’ve recently purchased The Original Silent Gate for your 1967-1972 Chevy/GMC Truck Fleetside Tailgate, we thank you for your business! Our ultimate hinge trunnion 6-piece set is made of stainless steel and Delrin, with a patent-pending design.
To install your new trunnion set, start by removing the old trunnion bracket from each side of your tailgate. Before you install the new stainless steel trunnions, inspect the tailgate’s female flange pockets where the trunnions will be installed. Clean all debris, paint buildup, dirt, and heavy rust from these pockets to ensure a smooth installation.
Next, size up the installation area, making any necessary adjustments to ensure the trunnions fit properly. When installing the female Delrin bearing on each side of the tailgate, line up the flat edges front to back as seen in the picture. You may need to tap the flange on the inside of the tailgate either open or closed slightly to achieve a perfect fit.
If the Delrin bearing fits too tightly, it will be difficult to install the trunnion ball and operate the tailgate. It should be flush with the edge of the tailgate or just below flush. If it is not flush, remove it and sand the backside (with no bevel) using a grinder or sandpaper. Sand the edges of the Delrin bearing to improve the fit as needed.
Keep in mind that every tailgate has a unique history and may require additional attention and alterations to achieve a perfect fit. Flat edges installed on each side of the tailgate prevent spinning.
Depending on your tailgate, the Delrin (black piece) with the beveled edge can be installed inside the cup pocket or as shown. Ensure that it is installed flush or just below flush with the tailgate edges.
Once you’ve installed the Delrin bearing, you can proceed to install the new stainless steel trunnion hinge assembly and reattach the tailgate using your original hardware or upgrade to stainless steel. Be sure to use anti-seize grease when reassembling stainless steel items. Have someone help you hold the tailgate in place while you get the bolts back in, and don’t tighten the bolts all the way until you’ve achieved a perfect fit.
