Chevy & GMC Truck Parts Interchange Checker

Found a door, fender or tailgate off another year and want to know if it fits? Pick your truck, its year and the part. The checker shows which years bolt straight on, which fit with some work and what that work is, and which don’t swap at all. It covers 1947-98 Chevrolet and GMC trucks, including the square body Suburban and Blazer built through 1991, and the S10 and S15.

Notes come from parts catalogs and owner reports. These trucks are old and often modified, so test-fit before you cut or paint.

The years where nothing crosses

Most body parts swap freely inside a generation. These are the model years where GM changed enough that parts stop bolting across:

  • 1953 to 1954: new windshield, dash, grille and fenders on the first series.
  • 1955 first to second series: an all-new truck. Almost nothing crosses.
  • 1957 to 1958: dual headlights and a new front clip.
  • 1963 to 1964: new cab, doors, glass and dash.
  • 1966 to 1967, and 1972 to 1973: new generations.
  • 1980 to 1981: new front end. The hood hinges moved to the cowl, so fenders, hood and bumper change together.
  • 1987 to 1988: the new OBS pickup. The square body Suburban, Blazer and crew cab carried on to 1991.
  • 1994 to 1995: the OBS interior, dash, column and wiring changed.
  • S10, 1993 to 1994: the second generation shares nothing with the first.

Parts that carry across generations

  • The stepside tailgate is the same design from 1954 to 1987.
  • The fleetside tailgate fits every 1958-66.
  • 1960-66 front fenders are one part all seven years.
  • Square body doors, fenders, hood and glass fit the 1988-91 Suburban, Blazer and crew cab.
  • The OBS windshield fits 1988-98 pickups and the 1999-2002 carryover trucks.

Chevy vs GMC

In every era the cab, doors and glass are shared. The grille, the hood front and emblems, the tailgate lettering, the gauges and the lenses are make-specific. One oddity: GMC kept the 1968 front fender through 1972, while Chevy changed it for 1969. Set the make in the checker and it follows those splits.

Not sure what year your truck really is? The VIN decoder reads the serial, and the RPO code decoder reads the options sticker in the glove box.

Cab

  • 1947-55 first series cab All of these cabs share the mounts and rear section, so any first series front clip bolts to any of them. The 1954-55 windshield and dash are different from 1947-53, so they come with the cab. 1947-50 cabs have a driver cowl vent. Chevy vs GMC: Chevy and GMC cabs are the same.
  • 1955-59 second series cab The firewall stamping and gas pedal mount changed in 1958, and hood hinge bolt holes vary. Nothing crosses from the first series. Chevy vs GMC: Chevy and GMC cabs are the same.
  • 1960-63 cab (wraparound windshield) The frame changed in 1963, so a 1960-62 cab on a 1963 frame (or the reverse) needs the front mount brackets moved. Chevy vs GMC: Same cab. The 1960-63 GMC dash has one hump, the Chevy two.
  • 1964-66 cab New windshield, A-pillars, doors, vent windows and dash for 1964, so it does not swap with a 1960-63. Chevy vs GMC: Chevy and GMC cabs are the same.
  • 1967-72 cab The 1967 cab has a smaller ignition switch hole. Chevy vs GMC: Chevy and GMC cabs are the same.
  • 1973-87 cab Close to identical apart from the dash. A 1973-80 hood on a 1981-on cab needs hinge slots cut in the cowl, and the wiper motor mount went from two bolts to three. Also fits the 1988-91 square body Suburban, Blazer, crew cab and chassis cab. Chevy vs GMC: Chevy and GMC cabs are the same.
  • 1988-98 OBS cab Same mounts and structure all years, but 1995 on has a different dash, firewall harness and column, and 1996 on has OBD2 wiring. Match the harness to the cab. A 1999-on GMT800 cab does not swap. Chevy vs GMC: Chevy and GMC cabs are the same.
  • 1982-93 S10 / S15 cab and body The 1994 S10 Blazer and Jimmy stayed on this body.
  • 1994-98 S10 / Sonoma cab and body Rockers and cab corners fit 1994-2003 pickups. Extended cabs with and without the third door (1996-on) use different panels.

Doors

  • 1947-51 doors 1951 added vent windows. Putting vent window glass into a 1947-50 door takes metal work, and the window garnish moldings don’t swap. Turn-down outside handles. Chevy vs GMC: Shared.
  • 1952-55 first series doors Push-button outside handles. Hinges are the same as 1947-51. Chevy vs GMC: Shared.
  • 1955-59 second series doors Shells and latches fit all years. Some catalogs split the door glass 1955 / 1956-57 / 1958-59, so check before buying glass. Chevy vs GMC: Shared.
  • 1960-63 doors (dog-leg) Chevy vs GMC: Shared.
  • 1964-66 doors Chevy vs GMC: Shared.
  • 1967-72 doors A 1972 molded door panel on a 1967-71 door needs about eight holes drilled for clips, and the 1972 regulator and handle studs are longer. A 1967 outside handle mounts differently (round hole, not teardrop). Chevy vs GMC: Shared.
  • 1973-76 doors Chevy vs GMC: Shared.
  • 1977-87 doors Power windows arrived in 1977. 1977-80 and 1981-on doors share the shell but not the panels and handles, and 1981-on glass is thinner. Also fits the 1988-91 square body Suburban, Blazer, crew cab and chassis cab. Chevy vs GMC: Shared.
  • 1988-98 OBS doors Same shell for manual and power windows, and it also fits the 1992-99 Suburban, 1992-94 Blazer and 1995-99 Tahoe and Yukon. 1995-on shells have a dent to clear the inside handle, and 1988-94 door panels don’t work with a 1995-98 dash. Hinge position varies, so test-fit. Chevy vs GMC: Shared.

Fits with work

  • 1947-51 doors and 1952-55 first series doors A 1952-55 door on a 1947-51 body needs the later latch and striker, and the door jamb is different. It can be made to work, but the fit is usually off.
  • 1973-76 doors and 1977-87 doors Any 1973-91 door shell bolts to the cab, but the inner skin, handle position and regulator changed for 1977. Move the door over complete with its glass, regulator, handle and panel.

Front fenders

  • 1947-53 fenders Chevy vs GMC: Mostly shared. Some owners report GMC bolt holes differ slightly, so test-fit across makes.
  • 1954-55 first series fenders Chevy vs GMC: Mostly shared. Some owners report GMC bolt holes differ slightly.
  • 1955-57 second series fenders 1957 fenders have flats for the grille bolts. On a 1955-56, fill the holes or reshape for the earlier grille.
  • 1958-59 fenders (dual headlights)
  • 1960-66 fenders The same fender all seven years. Chevy vs GMC: Same stamping. GMC emblem and trim holes differ.
  • 1967 fenders (no side marker hole) Chevy vs GMC: 1967 Chevy and GMC fenders are the same.
  • 1968 Chevy and 1968-72 GMC fenders Side marker hole added for 1968. Chevy vs GMC: GMC kept the 1968 fender through 1972.
  • 1969-72 Chevy fenders Different body lines and front shape from 1968.
  • 1973-80 fenders Chevy vs GMC: Shared, but badge holes differ.
  • 1981-87 fenders 1988-on R/V fenders have an antenna hole. Also fits the 1988-91 square body Suburban, Blazer, crew cab and chassis cab. Chevy vs GMC: Shared, but badge holes differ.
  • 1988-98 OBS fenders 1997-on inner fenders have extra bracket holes. Chevy vs GMC: Chevy and GMC are the same.
  • 1982-93 S10 / S15 fenders
  • 1994-98 S10 / Sonoma fenders Fit through 2004, both makes. ZR2 fenders are different.

Fits with work

  • 1947-53 fenders and 1954-55 first series fenders Mixing 1947-53 and 1954-55 fenders and grilles means reshaping the grille recess and park light area and filling holes. Most people swap the whole front clip.
  • 1955-57 second series fenders and 1958-59 fenders (dual headlights) Only as a complete 1958-59 front clip: fenders, hood, hinges and grille together.
  • 1973-80 fenders and 1981-87 fenders Only as a complete front clip. The hood hinges moved to the cowl in 1981, and the bumper, inner fenders and core support change with the fenders.

Hood

  • 1947-53 hood Hinges, latch and cowl seal are listed for all first series years. Chevy vs GMC: Chevy and GMC hoods don’t swap: the grille top and radiator support differ.
  • 1954-55 first series hood Chevy vs GMC: Chevy and GMC hoods don’t swap.
  • 1955-57 second series hood 1957 has two ribs; 1955-56 is flat. Chevy vs GMC: Chevy and GMC fit the same, but the badge recess differs.
  • 1958-59 hood
  • 1960-66 hood A 1962-66 hood fits a 1960-61, but the 1960-61 Chevy pod hood is a two-year look. Use the latch that matches the hood: 1960-62 releases through the gap, 1963-66 through a rectangular hole. Chevy vs GMC: GMC hoods differ in the front panel and vents but fit.
  • 1967-68 hood Chevy vs GMC: 1967-68 Chevy and GMC hoods are the same.
  • 1969-70 Chevy hood Has bowtie emblem holes.
  • 1971-72 Chevy and 1969-72 GMC hood Chevy vs GMC: Same stamping; GMC has hood letters.
  • 1973-80 hood A style line was added at the front around 1978-79. Chevy vs GMC: The ornament base differs slightly.
  • 1981-87 hood The hinges moved to the cowl in 1981. Also fits the 1988-91 square body Suburban, Blazer, crew cab and chassis cab.
  • 1988-98 OBS hood Also fits the 1992-99 Suburban, Tahoe and Yukon, on the factory hinges and latch.
  • 1982-93 S10 / S15 hood
  • 1994-98 S10 / Sonoma hood Fits through 2004 within each make. Chevy vs GMC: Chevy and GMC hoods have separate part numbers.

Fits with work

  • 1947-53 hood and 1954-55 first series hood One owner reports a 1949 and a 1954 hood swap with only the badge recess different, but catalogs list them separately. Test-fit first.
  • 1955-57 second series hood and 1958-59 hood Only with the whole 1958-59 front clip: the hinges differ and the front is about 2 in. narrower.
  • 1967-68 hood and 1969-70 Chevy hood A 1967-68 hood on a 1969-72 needs the 1967-68 grille, latch and support, and some owners say the fenders and core support too.
  • 1967-68 hood and 1971-72 Chevy and 1969-72 GMC hood A 1967-68 hood on a 1969-72 needs the 1967-68 grille, latch and support, and some owners say the fenders and core support too.
  • 1969-70 Chevy hood and 1971-72 Chevy and 1969-72 GMC hood Same stamping. The 1969-70 Chevy hood has bowtie emblem holes to fill or drill.
  • 1973-80 hood and 1981-87 hood Only with the matching front clip and hinges. A 1973-80 front on a 1981-on cab needs hinge slots cut in the cowl.

Grille

  • 1947-53 Chevy grille
  • 1954-55 first series Chevy grille
  • 1955-56 second series Chevy grille
  • 1957 Chevy grille A one-year grille. It needs fenders with the 1957 grille bolt flats.
  • 1958-59 Chevy grille
  • 1960 Chevy grille Dual headlights on a 1960-61 grille support.
  • 1961 Chevy grille Dual headlights on a 1960-61 grille support.

  • 1964-66 Chevy grille
  • 1967-68 Chevy grille
  • 1969-70 Chevy grille
  • 1971-72 Chevy grille
  • 1969-72 GMC grille Chevy vs GMC: GMC uses its own core support, so Chevy and GMC grilles don’t cross.
  • 1973-75 grille (deep dish) Chevy vs GMC: Grille brackets differ by make (GMC is deeper), so grilles don’t cross between makes.
  • 1976-80 grille 1977-80 Chevy grilles interchange. 1980 deluxe square-headlight trucks use their own core support. Chevy vs GMC: Grille brackets differ by make.
  • 1981-88 grille Headlight bezels cross between years as long as the single or dual headlight layout matches. Covers the 1988 R/V Suburban, Blazer and crew cab. Chevy vs GMC: Bezels cross between makes when the headlight layout matches. Grille brackets differ.
  • 1989-91 R/V grille Square body Suburban, Blazer and crew cab only. Own grille, headlight bezels and core support.
  • 1988-93 OBS grille Chevy vs GMC: Chevy and GMC swap within these years; buy the corner lenses for your make.
  • 1994-98 OBS grille Chevy vs GMC: Chevy and GMC swap within these years; buy the corner lenses for your make.
  • 1982-90 S10 / S15 grille

  • 1998 S10 / Sonoma front end New core support, grille, headlights and bumper for 1998.

Fits with work

  • 1962 Chevy grille and 1964-66 Chevy grille Drill the grille support (about two extra holes a side) and use a longer bottom bolt. 1962 headlight buckets don’t work with the later grille.
  • 1973-75 grille (deep dish) and 1976-80 grille Change the outer grille supports and the hood latch. The inside hood release doesn’t work with the older grille.
  • 1981-88 grille and 1989-91 R/V grille Needs the 1989-91 core support and headlight bezels.
  • 1988-93 OBS grille and 1994-98 OBS grille Fit all four 1994-on bumper brackets (they’re longer), the 1994-on filler strip, corner pieces and lower trim piece.
  • 1994-97 S10 / Sonoma front end and 1998 S10 / Sonoma front end Fit the 1998 core support, grille, headlights and bumper together. Wiring is reported unchanged.

  • 1988-98 OBS bumper Fits all years, but change the brackets if you change grille era: the 1994-on brackets are longer.

Fits with work

  • 1973-80 bumper and 1981-87 bumper A 1981-on bumper on a 1973-80 frame needs the brackets welded or the frame horns modified, and it rubs the older fenders. A 1973-80 bumper on a 1981-on frame needs the lower bolts shimmed.

  • 1967-72 bed Chevy vs GMC: Shared.
  • 1973-87 bed Fleetside or stepside, short or long. The fuel filler changed from an exposed cap to a door in 1978-79, and the filler hose size changed around 1983. Also fits the 1988-91 square body Suburban, Blazer, crew cab and chassis cab. Chevy vs GMC: Shared.

Fits with work

  • 1947-53 bed and 1954-55 first series bed A 1954-on bed sits too high on a 1947-53 frame, which kicks up more over the axle. Raise the floor or crossmembers or flatten the kick-up, then realign the fenders and running boards.
  • 1947-53 bed and 1955-59 second series bed A 1954-on bed sits too high on a 1947-53 frame, which kicks up more over the axle. Raise the floor or crossmembers or flatten the kick-up, then realign the fenders and running boards.

That hardware changed mid-1976 and again in 1981, so keep it with the gate. A Blazer gate does not fit a pickup. Also fits the 1988-91 square body Suburban, Blazer, crew cab and chassis cab. Chevy vs GMC: CHEVROLET or GMC stamped letters.
  • 1988-98 OBS fleetside tailgate Shell, latch, cables, rods and handle fit all years, and the fold-down gate Suburban, Tahoe and Blazer. Chevy vs GMC: The CHEVROLET band is Chevy only. In 1998 Chevy got a new badge and GMC went from “GMC Truck” to “GMC”.

Fits with work

  • 1967-72 column and 1973-83 column A 1973-on column is larger at the dash, and the dimmer switch, shaft and neutral switch need work. Reported by owners, not catalogs.
  • 1973-83 column and 1984-87 column In 1984 the wiper and high beam moved to the stalk. Rewire and change the dash bezel, and keep the lower shaft with the column.

Common questions

Will 1973-80 doors fit a 1981-87 Chevy truck?

A 1977-80 door uses the same shell as 1981-87, though the panels and handles differ. A 1973-76 door bolts to the cab, but the inner skin, handle and regulator changed for 1977, so move it over complete with its glass, regulator and panel.

Is a 1988-91 Suburban or Blazer an OBS?

No. GM kept building the square body Suburban, Blazer, crew cab and chassis cab through 1991. They take 1973-87 body parts, apart from a few 1989-91 front end pieces. What is an OBS truck? explains the split.

Do 1967-72 parts fit a 1973-87?

Almost never. The cab, doors, fenders, hood, bed and glass all changed. The one swap owners make is a 1973-87 stepside bed on a 1967-72, and even that needs the fenders redrilled and the step and rear brace adjusted.

Can I put a 1995-98 dash in a 1988-94 OBS?

Yes, but it is a wiring job, not a bolt-in. It takes the 1995 dash harness, a repinned cluster plug, the 1995 heater and A/C harness and box, the passenger dash bracket and 1995-on door panels.

Can I put a 1958-59 front end on a 1955-57?

Only as a complete 1958-59 front clip. The hood hinges differ and the hood is about 2 in. narrower at the front, so the fenders, hood, hinges and grille go on together.
