About Hood Strut Kits for Classic Chevy & GMC Trucks

Hood strut kits swap the factory hood springs or prop rod for gas struts, so the hood lifts on its own, stays where you leave it and stops pinching fingers. Pick the kit for your truck:

The 73-87, 88-98 and 99-06 kits use Stabilus struts with mounting plates and hardware. Building a custom hood, tilt bed or hatch instead? The gas spring calculator works out the strut force and length you need.

Hood strut questions

What does a hood strut kit replace?

The factory hood springs, or on the S10, Blazer and Jimmy the prop rod. Gas struts lift the hood for you and hold it open at any height, and they do not wear out and sag the way old springs do.

Do I need to weld to fit one?

Not for the hood strut kits: the 1947-54, 73-87, 88-98, 99-06 and S10 kits bolt on with the brackets and hardware supplied. The 1960-66 and 1967-72 hood hinge and strut kits are different: their hood mounting plates weld on, so plan for a welder. Each product page lists what is in the box.

Which kit do I need if my inner fenders are removed?

On a 1960-66 or 1967-72 C10 with the inner fenders out, use the cowl-mounted hood hinge and strut kit. It mounts the hinges and struts to the cowl, so it does not need the inner fenders that the factory hinges bolt to.

Do Chevy kits fit the GMC of the same year?

Yes. The hood, hinges and core support are shared between Chevy and GMC pickups of the same generation, so every kit here fits both.
