Frequently bought together
Description
This kit converts the hood hinges on a 1988–1998 Chevy or GMC OBS truck from the factory springs to gas struts. The struts damp the hood on the way up and on the way down, so it opens and closes smoothly instead of fighting a tired spring.
Features
- Stabilus struts.
- Laser cut steel mounting plates.
- All required hardware included.
- Full color detailed instructions.
- Improves alignment, mounting, rigidity and support over the factory springs.
Fitment notes
We only recommend using this kit with steel hoods. It is designed to open the hood roughly to the height of the cab roof, which looks good at a show but is worth picturing in your own garage first.

Hood Shock (Strut) Kit - 88-98 Chevy OBS Truck
Common questions
What comes in the hood strut kit?
Two firewall mounting brackets, two hood mounting brackets, two heavy duty sealed bearing gas struts, four 5/16" ball studs and all the mounting hardware, including the low profile hood mount bolts. Finish options are listed at the top of the page.
Will it work with a fibreglass or aftermarket hood?
The kit is designed around the factory steel hood and has not been tested on aftermarket or fibreglass hoods. On a lighter or heavier hood the strut rate can be too much or not enough, so treat it as untested rather than confirmed.
Will my hood still line up afterwards?
Plan on realigning it. If the truck currently runs no hood springs or struts at all, the back of the hood near the cowl will very likely pop up once the strut force is added, and the hinges and latch will need adjusting. It happens on trucks with factory springs too, just less often.
Does the hood open as high as it did on the prop rod?
Not always. The strut sets the open height, and on some trucks that height sits below where a prop rod held it. That is the kit working as designed, not an install error.
How do I know it fits my truck?
This part is listed for 1988–1998 Chevy and GMC Blazer, C1500, C2500, C3500, Jimmy, K1500 and others. The full year, make and model list is in the Truck Compatibility tab on this page. If your truck has been modified, or you are between two of the year ranges we list, send us the year, make and model and we will confirm the fit before you order rather than after.
How long before it ships?
It is a stock item and leaves our warehouse in 1-3 business days. Transit after that is typically 2-5 business days in the United States. Larger orders can arrive in more than one box on different days.
